Speeding, overtaking without flashing, no belt, very personal interpretation of the Highway Code ... Who ever driven abroad has often railed against the driving style of the inhabitants of the country visited. And Europe is not far behind. The Vinci Autoroutes Foundation examined the bad habits of EU drivers in its European Barometer of responsible conduct, conducted with Ipsos. If European drivers are found to have an exemplary driving behavior - they self-ascribe 7.8 / 10 - they do not have harsh words for other motorists, "irresponsible" "aggressive", "stressed", "dangerous" ... More surprisingly, the survey results show that each European country has its bad habit. Even among Swedish drivers, however, seen as the most responsible and respectful Europe.

In Germany, drivers have trouble with the observance of safety distances. Roll pieces against each other, the risk of rollover in case of emergency braking? "No fear," 71% of German respondents. Worrisome when we know that our German neighbors are the European champions of driving without a break. Germans are capable of running 3 h 43 without going through the rest area box. The French, however, stop after 2 h 45, while road safety advocates a break every 2 hours. Respondents Germans are justified by explaining they roll despite the fatigue "because they are forced."

The Swedes are not respectful of safety distances (71%). And no question of depriving them of the pleasure of phoning while driving. They are 43% to be totally opposed to legislation prohibiting a driver to receive or make phone calls on the road. The hands-free kits, which could reduce the risk, do not have the odds in the country. 46% of drivers prefer to grab their mobile phone rather than using these solutions, against 24% in France.

The Italians call themselves the worst drivers in the Union, a view shared by other European drivers. A third of them confess to override the obligation to fasten his belt, and 21% do not hesitate to get out of their car to explain another driver. They are also 35% to send text messages or emails while driving.

In Belgium, we do not hesitate to take the wheel after a few drinks too many. A quarter of respondents recognize Belgian drivers drive while they exceeded the alcohol limit, because they feel in full possession of their means. The Belgians put the kibosh on driving beyond three glasses, while the Swedes refrain from driving after one drink. The French rank just behind the Belgians, by allowing up to 2.6 lenses.

The French have a special feature of their own: 88%, they are afraid of aggressive behavior of other drivers. This does not prevent them from enjoying insult copiously drivers who annoy them (67%). But doors and windows closed. French drivers also feel bad drivers, while they rank among the good students of the study, with 4.6 misbehavior on average over the 13 tested.
